Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
