The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
