PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net early on.

Yet, Marseille struck two times late to seize a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
