Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
