Given that stoppage-time drama have become habitual at the Amex Stadium, the faithful retained a glimmer of hope. Their faith was justified in the closing stages. Amid a hectic penalty area melee, van Hecke showed calm to slide the ball across the six-yard box, where Georginio Rutter arrived to blast it into the roof of the net. The equaliser sparked wild celebrations from the home players and fans, while it was a severe blow to the Hammers' survival bid.

The result does little to alleviate the relegation fears for West Ham, who stay deeply involved in the fight at the foot of the Premier League.
