Donald Trump's Framework of Punishment and Favor

Trump's insatiable appetite for revenge has quickly morphed into a methodical system. During the twelve months, the chief executive's rage and whims have adopted the shape of official policies similar to reminiscent to earlier dictatorial regimes. Government officials who do not cooperate are summarily removed and succeeded by loyalists. Political leaders who question him face prosecution, court proceedings and penalties. Adversaries have been categorized under executive directives as “anti-American”, “opposed to religious values” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with legal action as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Restructured

Every case involving targeting of Trump's enemies and protection for supporters demonstrates its own distinct qualities. But, notwithstanding their individual nature, they embody expressions of what has arisen as a systematic technique. Those episodes are far from coincidental. The administration's removal of Department of Justice lawyers and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, alongside his placement of supporters in senior positions, started swiftly, soon assumed a consistency, and has now been molded into a system. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been remade into partisan organizations under the president's clear command to execute his directives. Wrongdoing has been rendered normal. It represents the retribution system.

Management is focused with punishing the leader's alleged opponents than they are with safeguarding our national security.

Within the System

The origin of this mechanism has been revealed in the court filing of several former high-ranking law enforcement executives lodged in late summer in the US district court in the capital against top official Kash Patel and justice department head Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a initiative of payback against them for what administration figures considered to be a refusal to show proper devotion”. According to the filing that a former acting director, the former acting FBI director, details a discussion in which the director “openly confessed the illegality of his behavior”.

The official had sought to protect agency personnel from being fired, the lawsuit states. He advised him that “they” – perceived by Driscoll to be the executive branch and justice department – had instructed him to remove everyone who they considered as having participated in a criminal investigation against Trump. The filing continues: “The director explained that he had to terminate the individuals his leaders told him to remove, because his ability to hold his own position was contingent on the dismissal of the officials who handled matters involving the leader. Patel noted that there was nothing he or him could do to stop these or any other dismissals, because ‘the bureau attempted to put the leader in prison and he remembers.’” When the official informed Patel he was disregarding the FBI's own regulations, the director allegedly said “he understood that and he was aware the character of the swift terminations were almost certainly improper”.

Extensive Impact

Following the director's alleged admission to him, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and reorganized for the administration's retribution system. Six of the bureau's top officials were fired or forced out in the first days of the government. About thousands of lawyers at the department have accepted a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than several DoJ lawyers, among them those in the New York office, resigned in protest over what they viewed as partisan influence in dropping the legal action against the local official, the mayor, in return for his collaboration with his ICE arrests of foreign nationals. The anti-corruption unit of DoJ, which manages misconduct investigations, has been diminished to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been severely reduced: 70% of its employees has left. 33% of top officials at the justice department have resigned. The section implementing environmental law has lost half its management.

Favors and Sanctions

Regarding the Adams case, the interim prosecutor for the southern district of New York, the official, quit in dissent against what she described as the “quid pro quo”. Tom Homan, his “enforcement chief,” was present as the enforcer with him on television to announce: “Unless he complies, I will return in New York City.”. And, another figure, formerly the justice department figure and a past legal representative, who arranged the deal, was awarded an court role, a possible stepping stone to the supreme court.

The president's protection for crimes carried out while in power, granted by the extraordinary judgment of the conservative on the highest court, thus thwarting his prosecution over the political violence and maintaining his political viability for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he relies to protect his supporters. Given this protection, he has been liberated to permit corruption. The effect of the court judgment permeates his government and the GOP thoroughly. Trump v United States has metastasized. As a past leader's administration lawyer John Dean commented about the Watergate
