Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
